A : There are many reasons why underground sewer pipes can become crushed or ruptured, such as: Property improvements, truck traffic on sewer pipes, recent excavation work, and even heavy rain can cause the ground to sink or seep, which can cause sewer pipes to burst or rupture. Additionally, ground movement can occur from time to time due to weather conditions, such as: severe drought or heavy rain. Both of these factors cause the soil to move, which can cause sewer pipes to burst or fail.

A : Your sink, shower, bathtub, toilet, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. All of your home drains into a drain. So, everything you flush down the toilet or wash down your sink or shower ends up in a single drain pipe that runs off your house, called the sewer pipe.

Once you know that everything ends up in one main drain, it’s easy to understand why this is the most common drain pipe in your home to get clogged. Grease and oils from cooking, hair, soap from showering, and toilet paper from your toilet all end up in the same place. That’s why a clogged drain is one of the most common problems we have to deal with. And why you might sometimes get a bad smell coming from your kitchen or bathroom sink, or even your shower.

The key difference between a sewer pipe and a storm drain is that everything that drains water inside your home goes to the sewer pipe, and everything that drains water outside your home goes to the storm pipe.

A : Storm drains collect rainwater that falls on your roof, driveway, walkway, and other paved areas, and then carry it away from your property into underground pipes called storm drains. During heavy rain, the amount of water falling in these areas can be quite large, causing them to become clogged or overflow, leading to flash floods. Leaves, debris, and even tree roots can enter these drains, causing blockages.

Remember that storm drains flow into local streams and rivers, which eventually end up in the ocean. Never flush any toxic materials down your storm drains, as this will eventually contaminate our streams, rivers, and oceans.
